From actual pain to interactional relief
But a very few psychological approaches to mental distress are the subject of scientific research and publications. Solution oriented brief therapy has been one of them for decades. Yet two of its core statements remain innovative :
Pain is current. It might be related to the past but it is felt here and now. It requires actual attention. And actual change, based on a person's current resources, talents and strengths.
Wellness is interactional. We suffer alone but we truly experience joy with others. Family, friends, colleagues. Are they, at times, a major factor of stress or a cause of intimate distress ? Probably. But just as often, they can be a vital part of a systemic solution. Their love, friendship, and esteem do make a difference.
